Romantic style

Perhaps no style is as old and familiar as this one. Its name and partly its form are based on Romanticism, and overall – on history. Unlike the historical style, however, it is quite common in modern times, and many of its elements have become part of the common wardrobe, whether it be bows, ruffles and frills, lace, or perhaps the patterns – the narrow top and flared skirt, or (this is more from men’s Victorian clothing) the narrow trousers and looser blouse. There are countless types of dresses and skirts and many of them are perfect for romantic women.

Precisely because the romantic style is so celebrated and has such a wide variance of clothing, you must find your sub-type, or your version of the style, otherwise you can’t avoid chaos. Opinion on what is romantic varies even across stylists. Some include tight, seductive clothes (Kibbe’s typology) and others mainly pastel colors and a flood of ruffles, giving the impression of childlike vulnerability and naivety. It’s up to everyone what opinion they have of this style. I think it has a lot to offer, as long as we don’t limit ourselves to one concept, one possible look.

Personality

A romantic woman is a sensitive dreamer – mostly. Of course, there are also romantic women who have a fair amount of dramatic, rock, or otherwise rough style, and they are not to be messed with (and the others can be pretty stubborn, too). But the bottom line is that, try as they might, they never quite let go of their fantasies and ideals. They will hope for true love, imagine a peaceful family life in the country, maybe even marry a prince (and maybe they will take their husband for a prince even if he is a car repairman, after all, those strong, protective hands…).

They are sensitive, touched by sad stories and cute animals. They enjoy some order, but are not as “strict” as classic women. They just don’t feel good if their surroundings don’t look nice (they like to decorate, make things pretty, tend to a garden, …) and they also need to feel beautiful themselves. It doesn’t matter if they have three small children, they have to wash their hair and put on nice clothes or they won’t be happy. They also often wear nice things at home, they have a plethora of lacy nightgowns that more “practical” women are so dismissive of.

They enjoy creative or outdoor work and tend to be empathetic, sometimes too much to work with people. Conflict wears them out and they would rather design gardens than sell insurance (that would kill them) or sit behind a cash register. They love nature, animals, but unlike the natural women and girls next door, they’re kind of greenhouse flowers and would rather spend a vacation in a hotel than a log cabin.

Appearance

Skirts, dresses, lace – the main signs of romantic women. They may or may not also go for things with ruffles, but overall they like clothes that are flowy, wispy, soft and feminine, like themselves. Their skirts tend to be wider, but there are also romantics who wear pencil skirts. Many of them like jewellery and don’t feel at home without it; they also have long, beautifully wavy hair, which they take proper care of. Things reminiscent of the past suit them too, such as corsets lacing and hats.
