Even at first glance, the minimalist style is simple, yes, minimal. There’s not much of anything. Saint-Exupéry is believed to have said: “Perfection is not achieved when there is nothing more to add, but when you can take anything away.” This exactly describes the minimalist style. Any complexity or flamboyance is undesirable. This style is essentially trying not to be a style – to pretend it doesn’t exist. Clothing is mainly functional, its aesthetic function is dismissed – or perhaps it is the simplicity that is considered to be aesthetically pleasing. For true minimalism one really has to have the temperament, the rest of us would suffer from the lack of color and embellishment.
With every style, “wear what suits you” applies – here it applies even more. A true minimalist has this style in her blood, she tries to live minimally in absolutely everything. She buys as few things as possible, has a simply furnished apartment, doesn’t need much to be happy – mainly food for the soul. She borrows books from the library and if she has to buy them, she donates them after reading them.
Not only does she not find the white, black and grey combination depressing, she revels in it in a way that no other style can understand. She has her values, and a consumerist lifestyle certainly doesn’t fit them. She may have chosen her lifestyle out of a love of ecology or a desire to devote her full attention to more important pursuits – art, philosophy, employment – a life vision she wants to fulfill and all the unnecessary and possible obstacles that would distract her from her mission need to be removed from her path.
Minimalists are also usually very modern, they like technology and the advances of civilization, they don’t usually cook – they prefer meals with minimal preparation and maximum effect. Likewise, they prefer a minimum of expressing emotions. They may look like robots to some – but that’s just the way they like it.
(I am describing a stereotypical character here, few are this extreme – secondary character traits and second style usually balance it out.)
Simple, geometric shapes are the foundation. No bold colors, everything is neutral – white, black and grey, or according to the wearer’s color palette. No embellishments or accessories, and if the minimalist wants to go a little more daring, she adds one simple, metallic piece of jewellery. In the extreme, a minimalist outfit is really just made up of the essentials – pants or skirt, top, shoes and handbag. Likewise, a minimalist wardrobe or living space has only the most essential pieces. Minimalists are probably also the inventors of the capsule wardrobe (see the free guides section in the menu).
What the clothes lack in color and flair is sometimes added in styling. Not what you wear but how is truly important here.
