The main characteristic of the creative style is that it uses elements of many different other styles to create interesting and unexpected combinations. It’s chaos – and that’s their style. It would be a mistake to think that the creative, or eclectic, style is not well thought out. If it doesn’t match in style, at least it matches in color. The wearers of this style simply know how far they can go, how much they can afford, to still look stylish and not wear one big mess. Often people admire this style in adventurous bloggers and when someone is said to have style or set trends, it tends to be someone in this exact style.
It can be called different things – eclectic, artsy or extravagant style. But it always has to be unique, bold, special. If there’s one thing the wearer of this style is in no danger of, it’s being seen in something completely ordinary. It wouldn’t do to look like they don’t have an ounce of creativity. Even when they’re taking out the thrash, they would ideally make sure at least their socks aren’t matching.
Hipsters, artists and intellectuals. Painters, sculptors, poets and directors. And of course fashion designers and celebrities. They like to show that they are not like everyone else, they embrace veganism and zero waste and read Nietzsche, or at least live as extravagantly as they dress if they have the money (or know how to smartly get the perks without it). They spend their free time in galleries and love city life.
Their home is full of things they’ve made – or at least things made by someone else similarly interesting. Without exaggeration, art is their life, and they will be most satisfied in a profession that allows them to be original and use their flair for rebellion. Even in their personal lives they can be a little rebellious, forming unconventional relationships, promoting different ideas and movements, causing uproar.
But there are also creatives who love their privacy and peace, prefer to shut themselves away somewhere and make no waves – knowing their art speaks for them.
They have the courage to combine the impossible, wearing military boots and lace skirts and retro or ethnic pieces and anything that helps them stand out from the crowd. Hats and sunglasses are often their hallmark, as are bold color combinations and interesting patterns. Even their hairstyles tend to be colorful and unconventional. It’s hard to describe creative style in such a general way – whatever “rule” I put here, they’d love to break it. Lots of accessories? Why not. Colorful bell bottoms and a leather jacket? They don’t go together? They’ll show us… A great example of how to dress this creative is Iris Apfel’s style.
